I wanted to share some hopeful news in these grim times. Like many of you my staff and I watch the daily, seemingly relentless, increase in the number of cases of COVID-19. But we’ve been doing some number crunching and the recent COVID 19 data for Allegheny County may have a silver lining.
While we can never forget that each new case brings risks and fear to each person and their family there is evidence that our collective social distancing efforts are showing some results. We are here to empathize with those individuals and share the sentiment that we are all in this fight against COVID-19 together. The graph above shows the cumulative number of cases reported by day since the first case was detected.
We’ve graphed both Allegheny County’s numbers and as a point of comparison the state’s. And the most recent numbers suggest that we are beginning to bend the curve. This doesn’t mean we should breath a sigh of relief and go out and celebrate with our friends, but rather continue to strengthen our efforts. The best fight against COVID-19 is a collective, unified response that we will take every measure we can to protect each other.
The X’s on the graph show what the next week could look like if we continue our social distancing efforts – still increasing but at a hopefully manageable pace. And as a cautionary note – the triangles show what happens if we slip back to where we were only a week ago when the cases were doubling every two or three days. That would put us in New York City’s pace in less than 2 weeks.
So, my message to you is simple, I know we are all making sacrifices at this time in order to keep up these efforts, but our decisions to stay home are making a difference. So I am asking you today to keep up your efforts and even double down on them.
Before you go to the store, ask yourself – could I put this trip off for a day or two, could I order this online, or could I substitute something else for this that’s already in my pantry? These seemly small decisions will make all the difference over the coming weeks.
During this time I am hoping to provide you with strong, scientific leadership that will help to send the message that together, and only together, will we beat this. Stay safe and stay home.
